About Mark Zeglen

I like to say my journey as a woodworker started in the 1980’s, when I attended a Shopsmith demonstration for a multi-use tool that I still use today. As a full-time engineer and father, time for my woodworking hobby was limited while raising a family, but I found ways to make a few projects around the house.

I was inspired by my father who made pens for fun and for gifts, and once I retired from my “first career” I finally had time to set up my workshop and pursue my woodworking hobby.

Now, entering my encore career, I set up my workshop to continue the legacy and turned my hobby into a business.

The first batch of pens I made were mediocre at best—certainly not what I would be proud of.

Not being discouraged, I read several books and watched YouTube videos to learn more about making pens by hand. Putting this new knowledge to practice, I improved my skills and eventually artisan-quality pens evolved.

While attending a woodworking exhibition, I became interested in wine bottle stoppers. I purchased a starter kit to make bottle stoppers and I’ve been turning them out since, using the same skills I learned making pens.

My background as an engineer and in quality control means I’m a stickler about quality and performance.

I continue to improve my woodworking skills by attending seminars, hands-on training and woodworking exhibitions.

In December 2022, I upgraded my CarbaTec mini-lathe to a Rikon 150 VSR midi-lathe. The Rikon lathe allows me to make bowls up to 12” in diameter and has many other features that make it a joy to use.

As an artisan, I enjoy working with my hands, being creative. Making handcrafted items for myself and others gives me a sense of accomplishment and pride. I hope you enjoy my products and that you find something special to give or cherish for yourself to fuel your own creativity.
