Frequently Asked Questions

  • Parker™ Style Refills

Parker style refills are identified by having a large upper barrel with a small diameter tube at the bottom that a spring attaches to.

    Cross™ Style Refills

Cross style refills have a narrow tube with a small cap that has threads at the tube side. No spring is used on this refill.

    Rollerball Refills

Rollerball refills have a larger diameter body and a short, narrow tube at the tip end. The upper body is sealed at the end. The refill can be made from plastic or metal. A short spring is placed on the larger end to keep the refill from being loose in the pen.

  • These are general instructions on how to replace a Parker™, Cross™, or Rollerball style refill. Some quality refill brands include Parker™, Cross™, Schmidt, Schneider, Pelikan, Visconti, and Monteverde.

Sources for refills are addressed in the FAQ’s, ‘Where can I buy refills for my pen?

    Identifying a Parker™ Ballpoint Refill
Parker™ ballpoint refills are easily identified by a long, wide tube that transitions into a small, shorter tube that has a spring attached to one end. Pens that use this type of refill are twist pens or click pens.

Replacing a Parker™ refill on a twist pen.

    1. Grip the upper and lower sections and unscrew the two sections by turning them in opposite directions until they separate. Excessive force is not necessary. If the two sections are not separating easily, then hold the body and unscrew the tip.

    2. Remove the old ink cartridge and spring. Be careful not to lose the spring. On some pen models, the spring fits loosely on the refill, while on other models, the spring fits tight on the refill. Loose fit springs can go on in either direction. On tight fit springs, insert the smaller end on the refill and push it up to the large section of the refill.

    3. Insert the refill and reassemble the pen. Do not over tighten

Replacing a Parker™ refill on a click pen.

    1. Hold the lower section while turning the upper section in a counterclockwise direction.

    2. Remove the old ink cartridge and spring. If one end of the spring is smaller, put this end on the refill first.

    3. Place the lower section over the refill and spring and screw the two pieces together until snug.

    4. If the click mechanism is not working smoothly, loosen the two sections and press the button. This should seat the refill in the correct position.

    5. Tighten the two sections.

    Identifying a Rollerball refill.

Rollerball refills are similar to Parker™ refills except they don’t use a spring on the tip section and the upper end is flat.

How to replace a Rollerball refill.

    1. Remove the cap.

    2. Hold the pen with the tip upright.

    3. Unscrew the metal tip and remove the old rollerball refill. CAUTION: There is a spring inside the barrel and it will fall out if the open end of the barrel is pointing down.

    4. Insert the new refill and keep holding the barrel upright.

    5. Screw the metal tip onto the barrel.

    Identifying a Cross™ Refill

Cross™ style refills are identified by a long, slender tube with a threaded black cap at one end. Cross™ refills are only found in certain style twist pens.

    Replacing a Cross™ refill.

    1. Retract the ink cartridge.

    2. Note the grain alignment on wood bodied pens so the grain match can be restored on reassembly. Plastic bodied pens may or may not have a pattern match.

    3. Grip the upper and lower barrels and pull them apart.

    4. Remove the old ink cartridge by turning it counterclockwise.

    5. Insert the new refill and turn it in a clockwise direction until it stops.

    6. Place the upper barrel over the twist mechanism while aligning the grain or pattern match observed in Step 1. Push the two barrels together.

  • To use the stopper, push down while twisting gently in a clockwise direction for a tight seal. Do not push straight down. To remove, gently pull up using a rocking motion or twisting in a clockwise direction. (Turning counterclockwise will separate the stopper from the top. Put the two sections together by turning the top clockwise on the threaded fitting.)

  • Watch a short video showing how to use the can tab pull.

Just hook the tab ring from the middle side of the lid then push the handle down and pull it toward you to completely open the can. You can also slip the pull under vacuum lid jars and slightly bend the lip outward to release the vacuum.

  • Burls are an abnormal growth on the trunk of a tree. Burls are formed on a tree in response to an injury, disease, or insect damage. They are a wild, abnormal growth.

Burls have beautiful, intricate, random, and colorful grain patterns. Sometimes the burls contain bark inclusions due to the manner of growth. Bark inclusions on a finished product generally appear as brown or black lines or spots. Bark inclusions are natural to the burls growth, they are not considered a defect on a finished product.

Due to the nature of burls, they may also have small cracks that are visible on the finished product. Any visible crack is filled and sealed before the pen is finished.

Burls used for my writing instruments may be natural color or dyed in various colors by the supplier.
